Charlotte Bunch Leads by Example
Professor Charlotte Bunch is an impressive woman. With all of her contributions to the women’s, civil, and gay human rights movements, it’s no surprise that she was recognized in the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1996.
To this day, Bunch strives to bring women together. She created a network of strong women by organizing international conferences and giving speeches on women’s issues.
Her words spearheaded women’s issues and even inspired the inclusion of the importance of women in United Nations conferences on Human Rights. Here, she served as a consultant many times. “As a human rights issue, the effort to end violence against women becomes a government's obligation, not just a good idea,” she said.
Her studies on human rights have been recognized with numerous grants and awards that have allowed her to explore and share what she has learned. In 1989, Bunch founded The Center for Women’s Global Leadership, where she continues to strive for women’s well-being around the world.
Some of her other accomplishments include being a member of the Advisory Committee for Human Rights Watch - Women’s Rights Division and completing the Secretary General’s 2006 Report to the General Assembly on Violence Against Women as well as being on the boards of the Global Fund for Women and the International Council on Human Rights Policy.
Bunch’s copious contributions to human rights remind us that we have to be active in supporting and helping each other.
